Compliance Testing FAQs
This FAQ page will answer common questions that you might have about the compliance testing process. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us.
What types of x-ray machines must be tested?
In Western Australia, all x-ray units used in dentistry, chiropractic and radiology on living humans (except DEXA machines) must undergo initial and periodic regulatory compliance testing.
Dental x-ray units that require testing include:
Intraoral – Fixed, portable, and hand-held units.
Extraoral – OPG (panoramic), cephalometric, and combined panoramic/cephalometric units.
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) – Dedicated CBCT units and OPG-style units with CT reconstruction capabilities.
How often must x-ray machines be tested?
In Western Australia, dental x-ray units must be tested initially and then periodically at the following intervals:
Intraoral dental – Once every 3 years (36 months)
Extraoral dental – Once every 3 years (36 months)
CBCT dental – Once every 2 years (24 months)*
* Note that the CBCT testing interval was recently increased from 12 months to 24 months.
After a unit has been issued with a compliance certificate, the new expiry date will be displayed on the certificate and on the compliance label (yellow sticker) affixed to the unit’s control panel. We also send you a reminder when your x-ray machines are due for compliance testing.
For other radiological equipment, refer to the WA Radiological Council compliance testing program requirements.
How early should I have my x-ray machine tested?
We recommend that you have your unit tested up to 3 months before the current expiry date. Having the unit tested early (within 3 months of the current expiry) does not shorten the testing frequency. This is because the new expiry date is calculated based on the current expiry date, not the test date. Having the machine tested early also reduces the risk of accidentally illegally operating the equipment without a current compliance certificate.
The table below shows how the new expiry date is determined based on how early/late the unit is tested.
|Scenario||New Expiry Date|
|Unit tested early and within 3 months before current expiry date||Current expiry date plus one test period (e.g. 3 years)|
|Tested early and more than 3 months before current expiry date||Test date plus one test period (e.g. 3 years)|
|Tested late and within 6 months after expiry date (illegal if used on patients)||Expiry date plus one test period (e.g. 3 years)|
|Tested late and more than 6 months after expiry date (illegal if used on patients)||Test date plus one test period (e.g. 3 years)|
What happens if my x-ray unit fails compliance?
Fortunately, compliance testing fails are relatively uncommon with most modern x-ray units. Still it occasionally happens that an x-ray unit will fail to pass all of the test criteria.
What happens next depends on the nature of the non-compliance. In most cases the non-compliance relates to the technical performance of the machine and does not pose an urgent or critical safety risk to patients or staff. In these situations the QE will issue a notice of non-compliance which allow the machine to be used clinically for another 3 months from the test date. During this period the necessary repairs should be conducted. The machine should then undergo a re-test to confirm that the non-compliant items have been addressed.
How can I book compliance testing?
For compliance testing within the Perth metropolitan and Peel regions, we encourage you to use our online booking system. You are also welcome to contact us by email or schedule a call-back to make a booking, or to make an enquiry.
For compliance testing in regional areas please contact us to request a quote.
Do you charge for retesting non-complying equipment?
Yes we charge a fixed rate for retesting of non-compliant x-ray equipment.
For equipment located in the Perth and Peel regions, the fee is $99 per unit. For regional locations, contact us for a quote.
What is the turnaround time for the compliance test and sign-off?
We always aim for same-day compliance testing and QE sign-off.
Can you repair my x-ray machine?
No, we just specialise in compliance testing. This allows us to focus on providing an independent, affordable and efficient service. Compliance testing should remain independent of service and repairs to avoid conflicts of interest.
